Glide Business are delighted to confirm it has reached the 600 ‘Fibre’ club with the Government’s Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme, meaning 600 businesses are now accessing gigabit-capable broadband thanks to the DCMS’ Gigabit Voucher Scheme.
The news comes on the back of the recognition from ISPA for the real difference that Glide are making to business broadband across the county, and shortlisting for this year’s CNA awards in the fields of innovation and growth.
With the 600th Glide Business voucher claimed in November 2018, let’s take a look at what the milestone shows about the uptake for the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme, and where things are heading.
Setting the gigabit scene
In March 2018, the government launched a £67 million funded pot to help SMEs to access gigabit-capable connectivity, widely considered the gold standard of business broadband, and marked a huge steps towards unleashing fibre broadband for qualifying UK companies.
The aim is twofold - to help business get a much needed upgrade on the connectivity that is necessary to compete in today’s markets, but it’s also a signal of intent from the government that it realises the state of business broadband is far from rosey.
Glide Business are one of the ISPs that the DCMS has labelled as a supplier for the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme, and it means that companies that pass the voucher criteria, including having no more than 250 employees, can get up to £3000 off the install of the gigabit tech.
However, Glide’s experience with scheme goes back further. In fact, Glide Business were actually part of the gigabit scheme trial back in 2017 for the Coventry and Warwickshire region.
2017 was also the year we launched our fibre to the premises (FTTP) solution to go hand in hand with the £3,000 gigabit voucher scheme, all with the aim of a cost-effective ultrafast connection for businesses in the CSW area.
Going gigabit all over the country
When analysing the 600 strong list of companies that have claimed a gigabit voucher, we can begin to see the geographical breadth of the scheme. Since 2017 we’ve been somewhat of a gigabit globetrotter.
We’ve been fibring up the country at pace – from Nottinghamshire to the South coast, from Gloucestershire to Essex.
That growth in coverage can only be truly appreciated when you take a look at our interactive network map. They say a picture is worth a thousand words...
Better business broadband for all
We’re all about one thing - your business. That means building a national network that is made to unleash fibre broadband for your company. And ulimately it means more businesses are able to access the broadband they truly need.
And the proof is in the pudding. We’ve managed to give one new business a day the chance to experience gigabit connectivity through the Gigabit Voucher Scheme. Then there comes the tech bits:
- On average we’re increasing business’ broadband speeds 6 fold (wave goodbye to Madagascan speeds!)
- 40% of businesses we’ve supplied a voucher to have services above the minimum 100 Mbit/s that the scheme stipulates - and that means good things for those IT managers out there.
- 1 in 5 businesses are having premium fibre leased lines provided straight to their business
But stats don’t do justice to the impact that the scheme is having. In fact, too much is often said about the tech with the gigabit scheme and blue-sky thinking.
Let’s get to the point.
Businesses are beaming because the scheme is doing exactly what it’s meant to do - a shot in the arm for the backbone of our economy. Here’s what the gigabit voucher has meant to a couple of customers with Glide Business as part of the 600 ‘Fibre’ club:
“A slow connection can mean it takes longer to send information, and makes it difficult to collaborate with people outside of the office. The Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme was something that we could use to help rationalise the cost, and when you combined the help with the improvement in speed, efficiencies, speed and reliability, it was a logical step to take.”

What’s going to happen with gigabit in the future?
We’d like to say we can read into the future, but we’d be lying. What we can say, with confidence, is:
1) The scheme is going to run until 2021 or when the funding runs out
That’s right. That’s what was stated way back when the scheme was announced. It’s not a shock, but we’d be remiss to not let you know that truth. It isn’t a scare tactic, but more of a reality businesses must face.
2) Future proofing isn’t for everyone
We understand that. We take the time to understand what your business needs from its broadband. The reality is that there are businesses who don’t use their internet for anything other than emails or to let their staff watch YouTube on lunch.
But for businesses expanding into ecommerce (or are already there), want to use the cloud, the Internet of Things, or just don’t want a super awkward wait when taking card payments in their shop, the scheme is there for your present, future and beyond.
3) Don’t just choose anyone
When you’re considering fibre broadband for your business, don’t settle for a jack of all trades. Put down the mouse, take a deep breath and head over to glidebusiness.co.uk/fibreunleashed.
Well, we’d like to think that since 2017 we’ve connected a good number of businesses to the service they need, we supply you straight from the source (unlike other providers…), and above all else we want your business to go from strength to strength, and do all that we can to help you.
